Heirs of the King

Romans 8:12-17

2So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh–

13for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

14For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

15For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”

16The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God,

17and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

Short message today, but important all the same. Here we see that we are heirs, we believers and children of God. It is explained in my study bible that we are children through rebirth. The rebirth that takes place (aka “born again”) by accepting Christ as our savior. But, what are we heirs OF?

The Kingdom! We suffer in persecution with Christ and we rise up with Christ. People mock us for going to church, for trying not to curse, for reading our bibles, for praying. Our humanistic ways want us to fight back. Someone spends 18 grand on a sign disputing God, we immediately want to put up another to say God exists. I welcome it!!! Please, tell me I’m wrong. Tell me God doesn’t exist. Use the excuse that “the bible was written by man.” Deny that feeling inside you that tells you to believe. All you are doing is fulfilling prophecy!!! It just tells me that my Lord is soon to return. Thank you “unbelievers”. Thank you rebukers. Thank you thieves of material possessions like a plastic baby Jesus. (I’m pretty sure He could care less about it.) If I can be persecuted for following my Savior, it’s the least I could do. After all, he ransomed me and freed me from the slavery of sin. I am no longer of this world and there is nothing you could do to me that won’t bring me closer to going home.

We no longer are subject to the rules and consequences of the flesh – death and eternity in hell. Rather, we are filled with the Spirit, our Guide through this life, and afterwards we are promised eternity in the Kingdom. I’m feeling another William Wallace moment coming on…

Do you live with the spirit of fear, or the spirit of adoption?
