Psalm 100

As we approach the season of Thanksgiving, Psalm 100 is a beautiful hymn to help us orient our hearts in the right direction.  The psalmist encourages us to shout joyfully to God.  Generally, we shout angrily at the TV because of the football game we are watching or judgmentally at our family and friends because we have entered a contentious conversation that gets our blood boiling.  How ironic is that?  A celebration that allows us to get together and enJOY the company of our loved ones and a feast meal turns into regret and turmoil.  We should leave the party filled with joy (even singing, as verse 2 mentions).

As we sit down at the table and take in the view and aroma of the bountiful provisions God has supplied, let us be thankful for what is there.  Whether it be a ham, turkey, steak, or a simple bologna sandwich…we shall remember that it is only there because God provided it for us.  We must recognize His sovereignty over us and His love for us.  We did nothing to deserve it.  The very fact that we are able to sit and enjoy is a blessing.

Let us enter His presence.  Let us invite Him to be amongst us.  Let us thank Him for His goodness to us, regardless of our current situation.  Verse 5 tells us why:

For the LORD is good; His lovingkindness is everlasting And His faithfulness to all generations.

Here’s an old hymn inspired by this psalm!
