Psalm 107

When I started reading Psalm 107 today, I honestly wasn’t wholly invested in the message.  At first, I thought, “ok, this is another hymn giving thanks to the Lord, what am I going to write about this time that’s different?”  I mean, when you have read over 100 of these things already, you wonder what else could we cry out to God about or praise Him for?  Well, this is why there are more than 100 psalms, we get to find out!

The introductory section (verses 1-3) seems quite generic and almost repetitive of some other psalms we have already read.  Not that it is a bad thing and we certainly should recognize God’s goodness and lovingkindness…isn’t that what we have been doing throughout these psalms already?  But as we read through this psalm, each stanza has its own affliction it speaks to: wandering in the desert place, being a prisoner, folks who were foolish and are suffering the consequences of their decisions, sailors lost at sea, and even rebellious hellions.  I can’t say for you, but I’ve been at least one of those things actually and on a spiritual level have been all of those at one point or another in my life.

But God.

But God rescues, restores, and resets.  He guides the lost in the wilderness to a place of plenty.  He breaks the chains and bars of the prisoner.  He offers repentance and forgiveness to the wicked.  He calms the storm for the sailor.  He rescues you and me from the calamity in which we find ourselves, whether it is our fault or not.  He is our Savior, our Redeemer, our Multiplier.  Jesus said to His disciples (and us) in John 10 where He is talking about how He is the Good Shepherd:

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

John 10:10

Whether we deserve it or not, He rescues us.  Regardless of how we got there, He comes for us.  Despite our own faithlessness, He is faithful.  So do we have another reason to praise and worship Him?  Absolutely.  How could we not?

  1. God is so gracious and forgiving to continue to pursue us when we rebel and to even welcome us back. Help us Lord to also pursue rebels and offenders, the lost and the imprisoned, and to forgive their offenses against You and us. Please put Your forgiveness in our hearts so we can extend our hands in love to all those around us.
