Receiving God’s Rest

Matthew 11:25-30
25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. 26 “Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight. 27 “All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. 28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. 30 “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Think also of what Paul says in Romans 11:

33 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! 34 For WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, OR WHO BECAME HIS COUNSELOR? 35 Or WHO HAS FIRST GIVEN TO HIM THAT IT MIGHT BE PAID BACK TO HIM AGAIN? 36 For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen.

One thing that the bible repeats over and over again is God’s love, kindness, knowledge, and wisdom. Yet some of the things we witness God do doesn’t seem very wise, kind, loving, or knowledgeable, does it? We think that God doesn’t care, or have a clue, or really love us because of some of the things we witness here on earth. But we must remember that He is sovereign and He is omnipotent. He sees and knows everything and has designed it all with our best interests at heart. Just because we don’t understand it all doesn’t mean that God is wrong; it means we are not God.

Jesus is praying to God the Father and recognizing His wonder in being God. It seems backwards to human thinking. It appears God is going crazy and doing things all wrong, maybe even contrary to what we read in the bible. But the way He does things, some reasons known and others unknown to us, it is all because it is pleasing in His sight. We struggle with that because we don’t understand His ways. Jesus says He is the key to having an intimate relationship with the Father so we can begin to better understand. If we really want to know the answers, we have to go through the Son to get to the Father. He also promises that in doing so we will find relief. Mentally, emotionally, and physically, God offers us relief from the turmoil we experience in this world. Why are we living in turmoil? We continue to try to do things our way and they don’t always work out, do they? But if we are focused on God’s Kingdom and empowered by the knowledge offered through Jesus, life will seem more like a blessing than a curse.

Are you heavy laden and weary? Does your soul need rest? Jesus says He will teach us if we go to Him. We have to humble ourselves and recognize that we don’t know what is best and then seek the answers from the one who does. It’s not an easy process, but it is the process we all need to take. Will you?
