Savor the Savior

Do you consume the word of God?  Have you been in search of the fountain of youth to delay  aging or even defy death?  Have you ever stopped to think about the significance of Jesus being born in a manger and how that relates to everlasting life?

John 6:52-58

52 Then the Jews began to argue with one another, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. 54 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. 56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. 58 This is the bread which came down out of heaven; not as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live forever.”

How many times do we listen to someone speaking and instead of trying to understand what they are saying, pick apart their words?  I picture here a scene where Jesus has captivated the crowd and after He said what we read yesterday, they become distracted by each others’ grumblings and then turn to themselves asking questions of each other.  How often do we do that today?  We turn to other men (and women) for answers instead of asking God Himself for the answers.

In reading this passage, I think back to something that a good friend related to me on New Year’s Eve.  He talked about Jesus being born in a manger and explained what a manger is.  A manger is a feeding trough for cattle.  We all know that in feeding, an animal (or human) is strengthened and nourished.  Thus was the purpose of Christ.  Here is revealing this purpose.  We are to consume Jesus, The Word of God like food as nourishment and strength just like food.  But, as He tells us, His Word is not just food that passes through the body, but abides in us so that it remains in us and continues to strengthen us and encourage us.  This bread will cause us to live forever.  It’s amazing how in this day and age, we do so much to “look younger” or “feel younger” in order to avoid our inevitable death, yet the answer is right here and we ignore it.

Do you consume His Word?  How often do you let it sit on your palate and savor the taste?  Ever eat something that didn’t really taste too good or wasn’t something that you really wanted but you kept eating it anyway, hoping it would get better?  That’s exactly what we do in this world!  We look for things that will satisfy us and when it doesn’t, we continue consuming it anyway.  “It’s an acquired taste.”  What a bunch of boloney!  Why should I have to train myself to like something???  Does this make any sense?

What garbage are you consuming that you are convinced will start to taste better?  What lies are you believing that make you think that it will eventually sustain you.  Everything we eat gets crapped out, yet when we consume the Word of God, it sticks, enriches, and gives everlasting life.
